Oh, well looky here.
Next to Claire and Cliff Huxtable, and my parents, Steve Urkel and Laura Winslow were my idol couples. Yes, it took forever for Laura to accept her love for Steve and actually GET with the guy without the attachment of Stefan… But what a rejoice when it FINALLY effing happened.
Also, can we hip-hip-hooray at the joy that “Family Matters,” like “The Cosby Show,” was a show that illustrated a family living like normal people, going through normal, hilarious mishaps, learning lessons of life, and who just so happened to be black, and where the trials and errors of oppression showed up in only a few episodes and didn’t DEFINE the show?
Never had I seen a nerd at the level of Steve Urkel who was a PoC. Never had I seen a love story between the ultra pretty unattainable daddy’s girl and the clumsy, annoying and ambitious science genius (who was so smart he could transfer himself into his alter ego. Like, WHAAA?!). Never had I seen slapstick comedy done by a PoC, either.
I love their love story because it was a version of black love I had never seen before, and I cherish it even MORE because I have not seen any like this again, sadly.
We praise Cory and Topanga for their epic love story (Gosh…. So epic), but let us not forget one of the greatest love stories where the underdog gets the girl, and the girl gets someone worthy of the girl’s time, nourishment, and love.
Yes, his annoying persistence and obsession was weird. Even uncalled for. But it’s a story so many guys can relate to, because Steve got the girl with his determination and him simply being a good friend, and Laura got someone who was truly down for her since DAY ONE. She didn’t need to be anyone else but herself with him. That’s love.
And yes, in that pic, she’s with Stefan. But Stefan wouldn’t be if not for Steve, and Steve is in there, sadly thinking how great it is to be with Laura, even if it’s not him, for who he is.
I love this show.
